Ask three people where to stay in East London and you may get three different answers: Shoreditch, Hackney or Bethnal Green. All three sit close together, and the best one depends on the trip you are planning rather than on which name you have heard most.
This guide sets out what each area is known for, the facts worth checking before you choose, and how to decide which base suits you and the people you are travelling with.
Shoreditch: closest to the City, busiest at night
Shoreditch sits on the edge of the City of London. It is known for street art, independent shops, Brick Lane and a lively evening scene. Shoreditch High Street station is in Zone 1 on the London Overground.
Choose Shoreditch if you want to be right where the activity is and you are happy for the streets to stay busy into the evening.
Hackney: markets, the canal and green space, where you find true locals
Hackney is larger and more spread out. Broadway Market runs along a short street between Regent’s Canal and London Fields. Around Hackney Central there is a lively main road with shops and some great restaurants, and it’s well worth a visit. Transport is plentiful, with London Fields, Cambridge Heath and Hackney Central Overground stations, and Bethnal Green Underground nearby.
Choose Hackney if your ideal day is markets, food, a canal walk and time in a park, just like a local.
Bethnal Green: between the two, and well connected
Bethnal Green sits between Shoreditch and Hackney. Bethnal Green Underground station is on the Central line in Zone 2, and Cambridge Heath Overground is close by. Columbia Road Flower Market, held on Sundays, is nearby and is a real highlight. If you want to feel the true East London vibe, go early on a Sunday.
Several LDN Stays rooms are in Bethnal Green. Some of our listings are about a five-minute walk from Columbia Road, with Broadway Market and Regent’s Canal around fifteen minutes away, and Shoreditch and Brick Lane within easy reach. There are plenty of great restaurants on your doorstep, and you can be in central London in no more than 20 to 25 minutes.
Choose Bethnal Green if you want a base that reaches both Shoreditch and Hackney easily, with a great food scene and a direct Tube line into central London.
Questions to ask before you choose
What will you do most? Nightlife and street art point to Shoreditch; markets and the canal point to Hackney; a mix points to Bethnal Green.
How will you get around? Check which line and zone your nearest station is on, and plan your main journeys before you book.
How sensitive are you to noise? Central East London streets can be busy. If you sleep lightly, read each listing’s description of its street setting.
Can you manage stairs? Many East London buildings have no lift. Check access in each listing.
